Christian Community: a Taste of Heaven

Setting the scene: school is about to begin and students are enjoying Lakehead University’s annual Club Day. Of course, we had an information table and as we waited for students to arrive, we chatted with leaders of other student clubs. That’s how we met Brian, president of Lakehead University Christian Fellowship. We shared our visions, plans, and activities for the year and discovered great opportunities to work together to reach students.

As a first activity, Brian invited us (the Lakehead University FOCUS Club) to join LUCF for a countryside hike. A family in his faith community offered to guide us through the expansive groomed trails surrounding their mountainside home and welcomed us for a meal later that evening. Can you believe it? What a great blessing!

On hike day, although it was somewhat challenging for some of us to walk up the highest point within 40 kilometers of the city, we enjoyed laughter, made friends, and had a lovely time of Christian fellowship and hospitality. Our new club executive was touched by the love and kindness of people we had only met once! These lasting memories definitely create a taste of heaven on earth!

We are thankful for the connection with LUCF and pray this relational bond leads to further adventures.

ISMC is honored to be among 87 faith-based organizations from around the world as a certified Best Christian Workplace for 2018. The certificate is granted by the Best Christian Workplaces Institute (BCWI), an international non-profit consulting firm dedicated to equipping and inspiring Christian leaders to build flourishing workplaces.

The evaluation survey covers various aspects of an organization, and ISMC is ranked very well in the areas of healthy communication, life-giving work, and inspirational leadership. We sincerely believe that building a healthy organizational culture will significantly increase our effectiveness to impact the world.

I was surprised while meeting with students at our U-talk Conversation Club. Aahil*, a young Turkish Muslim, told us he made a profession for Christ because Jesus appeared in a dream the night before. He was convinced he was called by the voice and person of our resurrected Lord.

Later, Aahil said he was confident he was doing the right thing in following Jesus and was bold enough to call his parents in Turkey where, amazingly, his decision was met with support and encouragement.

Aahil began meeting with a Christian men’s group, joined a Saturday morning Bible study, and attends church regularly. We met for discussions and Bible studies and when I suggested biblical baptism, he was convinced he should be baptized. When he told his parents of his impending baptism, they asked him to wait until they arrived for a visit in Kelowna.

Praise God for this sovereignty!
We expect greater miracles!

Blessed and greatly encouraged,

If you have tried sewing by hand, you know how hard it would be to fit a camel through the eye of a needle.

Jesus said getting a camel through the eye of a needle is easier than it is for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God (Matthew 19:23). This is a proverbial expression for an impossibility. But thankfully, we can take joy and hope from the second part of verse 26—that with God, all things are possible.

The context of this well-known verse is salvation. We can have the best vision, the greatest strategies, and give it our all, but the reality is: we can’t save souls. Jesus does. He can change the hearts of those entangled by world’s snares.

This is why prayer is foundational. At ISMC, we constantly pray for international students to pursue a growing relationship with Jesus Christ. God knows them best and loves them most. We’re not the ones doing the saving. God is.

To that end, our Sherbrooke team launched And There Was Light: Prayer Project to gather 100+ Christians who commit to praying for students by name. Together, we’re praying for the world!

Organizing talent shows always brings the largest number of performers and attendees. What a great opportunity for our international guests and volunteers to showcase talents and build confidence. A talent show promotes cultural exchange and brings together the ISMC Halifax community for a fun and friendly event.

Performances, ranging from instrumentals and folk songs to modern dance, are encouraged. Although most participants come to enjoy the show, we also share the love of Christ and touch lives.

The evening usually starts with a potluck dinner and a Bible-based small group discussion. Our main goal: make everyone feel welcome and loved while learning Bible-based insights such as the fruit of the Spirit, servant leadership, and Christ’s teachings.

We’ve seen increased interest and curiosity from international students and new immigrants to learn more about Christianity. We connect some of these guests to the Bible studies at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography or Dalhousie University, where many of our guests pursue graduate degrees and related research. We also encourage them to visit our partnering churches.

Please pray for God’s hand on the Halifax ministry. May our international friends come to know the Lord through these creative outreach activities.

ISMC’s vision is to empower international students to impact the world through Jesus Christ. To help make this a reality, we partnered with OM Ships International to send students on a short-term trip with OM’s Logos Hope.

The Logos Hope ship ministry is part of Operation Mobilization’s global Christian training and outreach movement. It brings knowledge, help, and hope by supplying literature resources, encouraging cross-cultural understanding, training young people for effective life and service, providing relief, and sharing the message of hope in God at every opportunity.

Thanks to the support of churches, partners, and prayer warriors, we sent four students—Emily, Martina, Vit, and Yurika—along with ISMC consultant Bert Kamphuis and volunteer Jeannie to participate in a Logos Hopeoutreach in late April in Aruba.

Highlights and summaries

Martina, from China
I expected to gain a deeper knowledge of Christ as I opened my heart to Him. While on the ship, I listened to many stories about God’s remarkable working in the lives of crew members and visitors. I was so inspired by His amazing love! My heart was cultivated and filled; I learned so much, my friend has already noticed changes in me. I know God is helping and changing me because He loves me!

Vit, from Russia
I asked God to give me a clear vision and to take me to a higher level of living up to my potential as a Christian. The profound lessons God taught during that week on the ship are truly astounding. I was challenged to practice true sacrificial love and embrace empathy, putting other people’s agendas before mine. God showed me that everything is under His divine control and that His plans are higher than ours. I realized that trusting God’s provision always surpasses my wisdom and experience. He answered my prayers and gave me a deeper understanding of my character and His character.

My trip highlight? Meeting people and sharing stories—how amazing to hear how God transforms lives and continues to work through them. I now place a greater value in such missions and am determined to support them.

Emily, from China
I learned much on this trip and heard many beautiful stories and testimonies. Four ships summarize my trip—relationship, friendship, worship, and Logos Hope ship. During the week, I got to know these four ships more deeply. Even though there were 400 volunteers from 60 nations, we were all members of God’s family. We worshipped and prayed together. I worked in the book fair and connected with many visitors. I also worked as an angel (a volunteer who cleans the bathrooms). Although not easy, I learned much and built relationships with every angel, as well as with God.

On the last day, I was part of a street ministry team that went to Aruba. It was the first time I had spoken to strangers about the gospel. Even though the weather was very hot, I was joyful to share the gospel and God’s love.

Urika, from Japan
Before I joined the ship, it was difficult to talk to people because I am shy. But while on board, God challenged me to overcome this fear by shifting my feelings to others. That helped me to communicate with people from around the world! At the book fair, I welcomed and introduced the Logos Hope to visitors and while working as a cleaning angel, I talked to crew members. Not only that, we shared the gospel on the streets of Aruba. What a great learning experience!

Jeannie, volunteer
This unforgettable experience was a taste of heaven. I see it as a ship bringing hope to everyone along with the book fair of knowledge. God is challenging me to be a stronger prayer warrior, to gain more knowledge, and to equip myself for global missions!

My highlights

  • Meeting crew members and hearing their testimonies. I was touched that they persevered through life’s challenges and trusted God.
  • Connecting with people in Aruba by visiting churches and businesses.
  • Working in different departments on board, like laundry, the book fair, and hosting a massage workshop for the crew.

Bert Kamphuis, consultant
I had the joy and challenge to help with preparation and promotion of this vision trip. Guiding the students to raise support, praying with them, going with them on the ship, and seeing God change their lives was a worthwhile experience! This trip also expanded my horizons, although my wife and I were on the first Logos Hope ship on its maiden voyage in Asia 46 years ago, just after our marriage in India!

My prayer is that God continues the work He has started with the students who went on the trip. May many more of our internationals get the opportunity to experience missions first hand, so they may be more equipped to share the gospel when they go back to their home countries.

The entire team was very encouraged through the experience of walking with God and experiencing His wonderful work. None of this could have happened without your support and prayer.

From July 11 to July 15, ISMC staff from coast to coast, along with some ministry partners from FAR from China, I Am Second/e3 Canada, ReEntry, and several local churches, gathered in Montreal for our biennial National Staff Conference. This was the first time our national conference was held east of Manitoba. While Canadians celebrated Canada’s 150th anniversary, on May 17 Montreal marked the 375th anniversary of its founding as a missionary colony!

Our conference theme was United in God’s Great Story. The 80 participants looked at aspects of God’s great story (His-story) in daily Bible studies, examining passages from creation to Revelation. Each of us had opportunity to tell something of their story, and how it fits into God’s big story. These connect group activities allowed us to build relationships with staff from across Canada.

Each morning began with prayer, and time was available during the day for additional prayer. We enjoyed worship times, with songs in different languages. ISMC staff members are multi-ethnic and multi-lingual; scripture was read in 18 languages!

Workshops on relevant topics were offered and the plenary sessions challenged us to equip returning students for the adjustments they will face, and to see the possibility of training some as church planters.

Each day we considered elements of emotionally healthy spirituality. Our leadership team members had studied Peter Scazzero’s book of that title. We see emotional health as an essential ingredient in achieving spiritual maturity.

The conference was a refreshing time of connecting with God, with ministry partners, and with other staff. May God bring much fruit from this gathering.

Life in a foreign country far from home and family is a huge struggle for international students. Faced with loneliness and homesickness, many of these young individuals desperately long for strong friendships and a home away from home. This opens a wide door of opportunity for Christians to reach these internationals.

Jesus calls us to welcome foreigners and share His love. This has been an essential focus for our ministry at the University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford. We aim to love international students, be part of their life and family in Canada, and minister to them through friendship and Christian lifestyle.

Recently, two Chinese students Mike* and Eva* from our U-Talk English conversation club asked us to help them plan a Canadian Christian wedding. “And would you stand up for us as witnesses?” While that was a high honor, we were especially excited for the opportunity to share the Christian faith.

At the wedding, we gave them what we consider our greatest gift of love—the Bible. It was a moment we will never forget. Mike, a Chinese Muslim, deeply touched by our love, became open to learn about God’s love and guidance in their marriage. Eva is eager to understand more about the Bible and attends church with us regularly.

Five days after the wedding, Mike went back to China to work and Eva stayed in Abbotsford to continue her studies at UFV. They will reunite this summer and start life together in Canada. We look forward to deepening our friendship with them.

Please pray for their salvation.

ISMC’s vision is to empower international students to impact the world through Jesus Christ. We do this through discipleship workshops, internship programs, and leadership seminars. Our purpose is to see international students equipped with godly leadership skills so they can make a godly impact wherever the Lord leads after their journey in Canada.

A recent leadership seminar, Raising Emerging Leaders for Global Impact, was organized by Memorial University’s FOCUS Club. It provided an environment where international students could be inspired, equipped, and connected with influential leaders to spark ethical and positive leadership at home, in the workplace, and in their communities. About 35 students from twelve countries attended.

During the seminar, ISMC President, Dr. Yaw Perbi, described a leader as an individual who inspires and influences people towards achieving a particular goal. He encouraged international students to aspire to their potential so they could make meaningful and positive contributions in their fields of endeavour.

Seminar participants were invited to join the FOCUS Club. Through the club’s weekly Bible studies and social activities, students can explore the Christian faith, develop Bible based leadership skills, and grow to become godly leaders who will impact the world. Imagine how the world would be if these students became fully devoted followers of Jesus, ministering to those God placed in their lives, be it in Canada or their home country.
